emergency evacuation

Emily Wankier, Haley Pulley, Lacy Anderson, Christie Coombs, Emily
Frekleton and I (with kids in tow)spent the morning at an American Red Cross Evacuation Center after an emergency evacuation at our apartments.

Fresh out of the shower and Elle just down for a nap I got a knock/ bang on the door. The Provo Fire Department was there to let us know we had to "evacuate immediately, there was a natural gas leak". The conversation went something like this:

Fireman: Ma'am, there has been a gas leak and you need to evacuate immediately.
Me: I just put my daughter down for a nap, do I seriously need to leave?
Fireman: Yes.
Me: Do I have time to go downstairs to my car and get my stroller?
Fireman: No, you have enough time to grab a jacket and go.
Me: Okay, let me get my daughter.

Then as he is waiting at my door I popped open my new stroller for the summer which I don't really know how to close yet, grabbed some blankets, diaper bag, Elle's water and our external hard drive...then I ran into Elle's room, picked her up out bed, grabbed George (her monkey) and strapped her into the stroller, then left. We were directed across the street and within 30 minutes the American Red Cross Disaster Relief team was there to let us know a bus was on the way to pick us up and take us to a shelter where we would be warm. We got to the shelter and they had McDonald's for us and we just hung out there for 4 hours while they tried to fix the leak. They were incredibly accommodating for such an inconvenient situation, especially for all of us there with kids!

We all just got back home and are safe! It has made me really re-evaluate the need of an emergency preparedness plan!

this is all of us on the corner with our kids!

If you only had 1 minute to get out of the house, what would you take?

Glad you are all alright... and that you had a stroller handy. Plus Mc Donalds what a lucky girl!

That is crazy and amazing how fast they got a shelter together with food and everything. It's scary to think about what you would take. I think I would have wanted to grab a lot more stuff. Oh and I can't believe we have 1-year-olds! Are you ready for #2?
